Getting the community involved

Overwhelming resident involvement made the year 2000 successful for Community Services.

Special events and departmental programs continue to grow in popularity. Attracting more than 75,000 individuals, increased marketing efforts and enhanced media collaboration brought the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Children’s Night Out, the Summer Concert Series, the Fourth of July Celebration and Winterfest to West Covina to educate and entertain.

Department staff, dedicated volunteers, the Youth Council and the Community Services Commission work together to make it all happen. It is estimated that 6,000 to 10,000 guests visited and experienced the Memorial Wall alone, a highlight for the year.
The department aims to improve the quality of life for our communities through social and recreational services. Our Senior Center and day care sites are responsive to the needs of the young and old.

Recreation programs and classes promote positive social behavior, self-discovery, skill development and self-esteem. Partnerships and advocacy with external organizations strengthen our transportation and capital improvement efforts.
