Guarding the environment

The Environmental Management Department focuses each year on promoting environmental programs in West Covina to help protect and enhance the public health, safety and quality of life for residents.

Each year, the City conducts programs that encourage safe recycling and correct disposal of waste. This year, more West Covina residents used these opportunities than ever before.

The programs included the following:

*Cleanup Saturdays — This program, held in cooperation with Athens Services, offers residents an opportunity to remove large items and spring cleaning items.

*Los Angeles County Household Hazardous Waste Roundups — The roundups are held in conjunction with Clean-up Saturdays. The roundups give residents the opportunity to remove hazardous waste from their homes safely for recycling.

The BKK Landfill continues to be a primary focus of the Waste Management and Environmental Quality Commission, which has been closely following the final closure, business and golf course development plans and the USEPA’s ground water remedy program. The new trees planted at the landfill site are thriving, and they are becoming increasingly visible from Azusa Avenue.

Other successes for the year include the following:

*Expansion of the used oil recycling program, which includes the disposal of used oil filters.

*Addition of two new electric vehicles to the City’s electric vehicle fleet. The two new vehicles will be used by Fire Adminis-tration, bringing the total number ofvehicles in the fleet to nine.

*Achievement of a 45-percent waste diversion rate for 1999. The City is now only 5 percent away from the state mandated 50-percent diversion requirement.
