2000 ANNUAL REPORT
THE UPPER SAN GABRIEL VALLEY
MUNICIPAL WATER DISTRICT
Provides a reliable supply of supplement water for groundwater recharge
and
domestic consumption within the boundaries of our service area.
With the dawn of a new century comes a new
era for the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District. The year
2000 provided the Upper District with a renewed and much more aggressive
approach to watershed management in the San Gabriel Valley. The Upper
District renewed its Up-a-Tree program which provides individuals
the opportunity to purchase trees to be planted in their name or in the
name of a loved one. The Upper District has also strengthened its water
conservation opportunities by providing a commercial, industrial, and
institutional program (CII). The Upper District contributes the success
of this year and welcomes the new century with a strong commitment to
partnerships. Through partnership efforts, the Upper District will continue
its proactive work with watershed restoration, conservation and providing
a reliable source of water for the San Gabriel Valley.
Ukraine Student Visitors
The Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District hosted visiting
students from the Ukraine. The students are part of a visiting student
program with La Puente High School. The Upper District sponsored a local
tour which provided them information on local, imported and recycled water.
The Upper District worked jointly with Metropolitan Water District to
sponsor a tour of downtown Los Angeles, including MWD Headquarters.
WATERSHED RESTORATION ACTIVITIES
The Watershed Restoration Program began in 1991 from an innovative partnership
between the Upper District and the U.S. Forest Service. The program was
developed as a means of restoring and preserving the
watershed in the San Gabriel Mountains, which directly impacts the local
groundwater supply. The program utilizes volunteers of all ages to help
collect acorns and native seeds as well as planting tree sampling in the
local mountain area. The program has also funded the development of interpretive
road signs explaining the function and importance of the local watershed
and a watershed nursery that includes a green house and
potting shed. This year, watershed restoration events attracted over 950
parties and over 11,000 trees were planted.
ULTRA LOW FLUSH TOILETS
Ultra Low Flush Toilets (ULFT) only use 1.6 gallons per flush as opposed
to regular toilets that use about 3 to 6 gallons. For 2000, the Upper
San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District distributed over 1900 ULFTs,
which translates to a water savings of approximately 21,974,764 gallons.
This years participating schools, La Puente High School and Gabrielino
High School, cumulatively earned $28,500 for their efforts.
EDUCATION AND PUBLIC INFORMATION BOOTHS & DISPLAYS
The Upper District goes to great lengths to provide information to the
public on water conservation and awareness programs. In 2000, the Upper
District participated at the following events: Citrus College Water Awareness
Programs; Santa Anita Mall Water Awareness Month Display; West Covina
Mall Water Awareness Month Display; Los Angeles County Fair.
SAN GABRIEL VALLEY WATER EDUCATION BUS TOURS
The Upper District sponsors and hosts water education bus tours designed
to 1) Show the entire picture of how the San Gabriel Valley receives water;
2) Demonstrate the work and effort needed to provide water to the San
Gabriel Valley; and 3) Highlight the many jobs and careers in the local
water industry. The tours are available to local high schools and senior
citizen centers. In 2000 over 600 high school students and 200 seniors
participated in the education bus tours.
LANDSCAPING & GARDENING SEMINARS
In 2000, 12 workshops were held for water efficiency. Landscaping and
gardening courses were offered, free of charge, to the public. The six-week
intensive certification course was offered in both English and Spanish.
A
two-part plant identification course was also offered.
COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRIAL, INSTITUTIONAL (CII) PROGRAM
Over 750 facilities took part in a new conservation program. This program
offers rebates for retrofitting several types of high water-use fixtures/
equipment with efficient water-use fixtures/equipment. Fixtures include;
Ultra Low Flush Toilets, Ultra Low Flush Urinals, Pre-rinse Spray Heads,
Horizontal-axis Commercial Washing Machines and Cooling Tower Conductivity
Controllers.
INSPECTION TRIPS
The Upper District sponsored four Metropolitan Water District Inspection
Trips this year 3 trips to the Colorado River System and 1 new tour to
Coachella Valley to inspect agriculture waters. These trips are designed
to show the facilities required to import water to Southern California
and to provide an overview of Southern Californias water supply
systems and the challenges to provide this vital resource.
