Measures GG and W Prove
Tax Dollars Make a Difference

Whittier City School District

Measure GG, the $9 million community facilities bond, continues to fund modernization projects at Hoover, Washington and Edwards schools. Whittier City School District is installing windows, doors, electrical wiring, and handicap accessible bathrooms to school buildings. At Andrews Elementary, new air conditioning units are being installed in classrooms. A new restroom facility is also under construction at Orange Grove.

Measure W, the bond passed by voters last March, will provide the resources for extra modernization and growth-related construction projects. Playground equipment will be replaced, and new pieces and
rubberized turf will be added to all elementary campuses. Outside enhancements will be developed at the two middle schools, such as re-stripping of the asphalt. Both efforts represent a $1.6 million investment.

In addition, seventeen relocatable classrooms will be added by April 2001 to extend Class Size Reduction to Grade 3. Anticipated placements will be as follows: Longfellow and Sorensen will each receive four; Edwards and Jackson will each receive two; Dexter, Lincoln, Mill, Orange Grove, and Washington will each receive one. This effort will cost approximately $1.4 million.

Architects are also developing plans for multi-purpose rooms to be constructed on eight campuses. This project will be initiated by 2003.

District leaders are currently working with a Design Committee, composed of community members, PTA leaders and staff, to formulate the appearance of the proposed new elementary school. Issues under discussion include the design of the school, number of rooms needed, space for student services, and more. Two Citizens’ Committee informational meetings have taken place for residents’ input. Information gleaned from the meetings was shared with the Board of Education at a recent board meeting.
